Official : Twitter Competitor Pownce shuts down, joins the deadpool, remains acquired by SixApart

Well, what was started by a few folks including Kevin Rose of the hugely popular Digg.com social news rating site is officially dead.

What’s Pownce (according to their own site)….

Pownce is a way to keep in touch with and share stuff with your friends. Send people files, links, events, and messages and then have real conversations with the recipients.

It was pretty obvious over the last few months that Twitter had gained massive traction in the microblogging space and Pownce never really took off despite plenty of coverage on many of the usual “Web 2.0” news sites such as Mashable and ValleyWag.

Thankfully, their exit from the stage is being done elegantly and they’re offering all users a way to export their content out (as described in the email below…)

The site is getting heavy traffic so expect error messages while trying to get your content out…

Subject: Pownce is shutting down

We are sad to announce that Pownce is shutting down on December 15, 2008. As of today, Pownce will no longer be accepting new users or new pro accounts.

To help with your transition, we have built an export tool so you can save your content. You can find the export tool at Settings > Export. Please export your content by December 15, 2008, as the site will not be accessible after this date.

Please visit our new home to find out more:
