So, if you have sites hosted on HostGator – either with their shared, virtual private server, or dedicated server services, you may have noticed (like myself) that there seems to be a major problem today.
I noticed the same thing (this site is hosted with HostGator) and after checking my server and database and so on for issues, I submitted a ticket about 25 minutes ago at 19:10 EDT. I then noticed on the Hostgator Twitter account that they had been mentioning a major outage at their Provo, Utah data centre… so (phew) it wasn’t specific to an issue on my server.
That said, I was pleasantly surprised to see a response to my ticket 19 minutes after my submission from Alex G of Hostgator Support:
Thank you for contacting us, we are more than happy to assist you. Unfortunately, the datacenter containing your account had suffered an outage earlier today. At this time your account appears to be online and functioning correctly. We have included a URL below with more information on the outage. We apologize for any inconvenience or frustration this may have caused and we thank you for your patience with this matter.
Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us again at any time.

So, would I recommend HostGator? Absolutely… especially if you’re looking for budget hosting starting at about $10 a month… there are far worse choices I have dealt with far less responsive support. Support is what makes or breaks a business.
